Arrest Amritpal Singh and supporters, or else…: Punjab Congress’ ultimatum to cops

By India Today News Desk: Issuing an ultimatum, the Punjab Congress said that if Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh and his supporters are not immediately arrested for running riot in Ajnala, the party will hit the streets in protest.

Waris Punjab De founder Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into a police station in Ajnala on the outskirts of the Amritsar city on Thursday, extracting an assurance from the police that his aide and kidnapping case accused Lovepreet Singh Toofan would be released. Six policemen were injured in the clashes.

In a letter to the Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, state Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring wrote, “The Punjab Congress party is serving an ultimatum that either you arrest Amritpal along with all those guilty of attacking the policemen, or we the Congressmen will be forced to come out on streets.”

Warring further claimed that the incident, in which Amritpal and his men allegedly used a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib as a shield while breaching the police station, had shaken the faith of Punjab. However, the perpetrators were walking around “scot-free”, he charged.

The Punjab Congress chief also stated that he had cautioned the DGP when he wrote to him about four months ago regarding the "dangerous and nefarious activities" of Amritpal Singh.

"This was something unprecedented and never heard of. Even during the dark days of terrorism never did such an incident occur,” said Warring.

After the Ajnala incident, the AAP government and the Punjab Police chief have come under fire from the opposition parties for caving to Amritpal Singh and not taking any action against him and his supporters.

Against the backdrop of the Ajnala incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will reportedly meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi today.

Mann had earlier said his government would maintain law and order in the state and no one would be allowed to disturb its hard-earned peace.
